In Edmonton, it's more of the same weather; we have snow and it is cold. But we're all grateful to live in a beautiful city where earthquakes don't exist and tsunami are impossible.
Did you know that we lived in Japan in the late '90s? Bruce used to ride solo in the bamboo forests around Yokohama. Sometimes he misses those quiet, meditation rides. But he hated the snakes!

We still have friends in Japan and they haven't left their homes, yet. Needless to say, we're still following the news closely and we have a new appreciation for our own climate. It's absurdly cold here but we decide whether we sulk indoors or bust out the bikes and ride. Right?
The Sunday group ride brought out 5 riders who are prepping for race season. Sometimes the fourth time is a charm, as Bruce displays in this video:
Have a great week! Stay warm and dry!

In Tokyo we rode "mamachari",which are heavy steel bikes with front baskets. Because there are plenty of spacious bike paths, everyone rides bikes to markets, arcades, convenience stores and schools. The writing below says "bicycle".
Both of the above from Sable & Argent
This is a typical parking lot in front of a train station. Sometimes I didn't lock up my bike because stealing a "mamachari" rarely happens. Often I couldn't discern my bike from the other ones!

Yes, there are many good things about Edmonton. I lived there for 5 years and enjoyed it very much, it has a lot to offer. Here in Vancouver, we must try to prepare. The picture of the bamboo forest is wonderful, very mesmerizing. I hope your friends are fine. Its a very sad time for Japan right now.
ReplyDeleteHi PaddyAnne! I didn't know that you lived here :) I suppose you can relate to our tough winters then.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say anything meaningful about the disaster in Japan, but I wanted to share my thoughts. Vancouver is definitely due for an earthquake, I hear. It's scary to think about it! Living wihtout electricity and running water is unimaginable to us. We are fortunate indeed.
