I Melt With You

I apologize for the 2-week absence! We've been hibernating! Last week the temperature was frightful. It was really scary to go outside. But today we got a temporary reprieve from the cold.
The temperature hit 3 degrees Celsius today. I HAD to run outside; the sun and warmth were beckoning for me to come out and play. Feeling inspired, I brought my camera along. I hoped to snap some photos as I ran along my favorite route. My route takes me past the Saville Centre, near the South Campus LRT. The Saville Centre (below) is a world-class curling facility, with a spacious lounge area (for after-curling beers & fries) and tennis courts.

This bike parked near Saville has been homeless since last Spring. I know this because I park my bike here often. It's been there forever.

It seems like a perfectly functioning bike, why would anyone abandon it? Such a pity.

My route continues past Foote Field track. Isaac often competes here in the summer.

Here is the Foote Field track without snow!

The track isn't plowed, so people usually start using it whenever it dries up.

The amount of snow here just boggles the mind.

Many of our bike racks aren't cleared. Here's just one example. Can you see the bike-wheel behind the sign?

Here I am, looking dishelved after my run. Notice that I'm not wearing a hat. It was too warm for that! I initially wore mitts & a toque but quickly stuffed them into my pocket early into my run.

I planned to include a video of Bruce and Puglsey, but I had technical difficulties. I will keep trying to download it and post it when I'm successful. Hope you're all enjoying your weather, wherever you are!

  1. The before (snow) and after (snow) pictures are amazing - you have a TON of snow ! It must be a bit frustrating to have it warm up so nicely - but still be somewhat inaccessible, at least for bike riding. I have recently contacted the city regarding an abandoned bike that I would like to adopt. It always amazes me when any sort of bike is just left - such uncaring owners!

  2. As a true Canadian, riding or running in these conditions is not a problem. So many move away to warmer climes but what they don't realize is the affect it has on being a real Canadian. If you ask anyone in the world what they think of when you say Canada, they'll say Cold, Snow and maybe Rocky Mountains. Nobody will think of warm rainy winters with green grass and tulips in February.

So, if any Canadian is scared of the all mighty U.S.A. taking over "Canada", move to Edmonton. No way they would make it up here. No snakes, no pocky plants, no earthquakes, no "Americans"! And the odd one that does make it mellows right out and blends in.

  3. PaddyAnne- We haven't had so much snow in 15 years, it's nuts! Sometimes the cold weather gets me down, but I try to take advantage of our warmer days. When it's warm I make plans to go for a run and walk as much as possible. Free therapy for the soul, lol!
We have a lot of nice-looking abandoned bikes...a really pity!

Anon- You're right...even though we live in an artic climate, you gotta do what you love. I love running, so I take advantage of the
Spring" weather whenever I can. Bruce rides in any kind of weather; you could say that it's in his blood, lol.
I WISH we had flowers in February.
It's a hard life up here, but the worst we have to deal with is snow, wind chill and the rare tornado. No hurricanes here!

  4. Many of the ECOS bikes I work on are ones that have been abandoned on campus and collected by parking services much, much later. I don't know if they also do south campus, but if that bike's in one piece it might be worth retrieving it come spring to add to the bike library before it gets trashed.

  6. Coreen: I will ask the Saville Centre staff about abandoned bikes. It seems like a perfectly fine bike! Such a shame for it to rust away!

Sarah: I know....so much snow. Bah humbug ;)
